Sustainability

The core disciplines of the KKB Group provide a practical demonstration of key environmental measures that enhance the sustainability of civil engineering and regeneration projects. We can therefore offer a number of advantages that will enhance the sustainability of regeneration and infrastructure development.

Technology

We invest heavily to research and monitor technological developments in plant and equipment to enhance the sustainability of our offering. KKB was one of the first plant companies to bulk purchase hybrid excavators back in 2016. We now own one of the UK’s largest hybrid excavator and diesel electric crusher fleets.

Our state-of-the-art hybrid excavators emit up to 15% less CO2 than conventional models and are able to use biofuels such as HVO to further drive their environmental performance. Our static crushing/screening plant are now routinely diesel-electric powered.

Innovation

Our innovative methods to remediate contaminated land rather than remove and replace with imported material greatly reduce transport costs and embedded carbon. On-site remediation decreases the transport and therefore fuel required to remove contaminated land from site while avoiding or reducing the need to import new materials to replace it and therefore the embodied carbon required to extract, process and transport it to site, the advantages of avoiding landfill notwithstanding. This will therefore convert into significant savings in carbon as well as cost.

Waste Recycling

KKB specialises in assisting clients to retain and re-use or recycle as much site-won material as possible which can significantly reduce disposal, use of natural sources as well as transport to/from site that will ultimately minimise costs and carbon emissions. Our management team has vast experience in planning, resourcing and delivering material management plans for large-scale regeneration and infrastructure enabling projects.

Waste Recycling

Social Value

KKB’s partnering philosophy and CSR Policies set out our commitments to provide added value where possible and support the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the communities in which we work. We have considerable experience of forming close, collaborative working partnerships with clients, end-users and other stakeholders that has enabled us to introduce innovation, efficiencies and added value to the area and creating a lasting legacy in the process.

We have an excellent track record of resourcing locally which includes partnering with local authorities and agencies to create apprenticeships as well as favouring supply chain partners that are located within a project’s catchment area. We have also developed a reputation for engaging with residents and communities to reduce any disruption and disturbance our activities may have on their day-to-day lives. We also invest our time and financially to support community initiatives and activities.

We partner with Kent-based organisation Cohesion Plus to support and sponsor a number of events to help bring our local community together.

Reporting

We can provide full chain-of-custody documentation and recycling stats to quantify the environmental benefits of our approach and have developed an in-house system for calculating the carbon emissions of our works packages which is currently being audited for accreditation against PAS 280. Combined, these allow us to report and provide empirical data to assist in demonstrating environmental targets or sustainability certifications such as CEEQUAL.

We are currently in the process of calculating our initial baseline carbon footprint for the organisation and our first Net Zero Plan will be published in early 2025.

KKB Group operates an Environmental Management System which is certificated against ISO 14001.

Testimonials

Hanson Aggregates have been using KKB Plant for 20 years and we have always found their attention to detail, safe systems of working and professionalism ahead of the competition

Steve Chidgey, Hanson Aggregates

KKB performed safely, reliably and collaboratively during this project. Their management team were well organised, pragmatic, and diligent to work with and both we and our representatives on site are very satisfied with the services they have provided us

Owen Tucker, Project Development Director, Drax

The Kingsnorth project was challenging with several revisions to scope due to changes in ground conditions, the potential for UXO, abnormally inclement weather and ultimately the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic. Throughout KKB remained professional in their response to these changes, worked flexibly with us and other contractors and completed the work within the agreed timescales and to the expected quality. We would be happy to engage KKB for similar work in the future

David Ball, Development Director, Drax

We were very impressed with KKB’s performance and can-do attitude in delivering a series of complex packages of enabling works for our new Tilbury facility. Their management team adopted a consultative approach throughout to transform our concepts into reality. The two-year project was completed on-programme, to-specification and without any major issues. The standard of workmanship was also to a very high quality

Steven Wallis, Area Operations Manager, Tarmac

This site was deemed to be difficult and challenging to remediate. The entire team at KKB were brilliant and always had the expertise and resources to resolve any problems. I am delighted at the end results. In my opinion, the job couldn’t have gone any better

KKB successfully delivered these works earlier than programmed, through being proactive and continuously driving the project forwards. Their staff communicated well and ensured that the project team were aware of progress and any issues which arose were swiftly dealt with in a very practical way

Gareth Lane, Project Manager, Mott McDonald

We were impressed with the professionalism and attention to detail that KKB were able to bring to this project. Their experience and ability to liaise with our project team as well as outside agencies helped to streamline a complex and challenging enabling phase.

Keith James, KIER Eastern

KKB accomplished this development with no little skill and professionalism. Their innovative ideas for re-using waste material delivered substantial cost savings as well as contributing to the sustainability of the project

Lucky Gill, Managing Director, Gill Aggregates

We are very impressed with the professional approach of KKB to the management of all aspects of the earthworks and remediation for this project and look forward to working with the team again

Steve Horton, Area Manager (South) John Sisk

Excellent disaster response within the hour from KKB Group who mobilised people, plant and equipment in a professional and safe manner. Nothing but praise for all KKB staff from the start to the finish of the job allowing the M20 to reopen within 24 hours

Asa Presneill, Director, Delta Ltd

We were really impressed with all aspects of KKB’s performance on this load and haul project. Excellent communications with their Project Manager and Site Supervisor ensured the works were well organised while the experience and expertise of their site operatives helped deliver the project safely, on-time and to-specification

Lewis Coxon, CEMEX

KKB Remediation carried out the works at Crawley Works for us. They were selected from a list of 4 tendering contractors as being the best bid and best price. They completed works in 23 weeks. Their price was around £2.7m including novated fees of our engineer. The works involved the introduction of the highways to the site and lengths of private road with relevant infrastructure. They were complete to time and cost parameters and to a good standard. Based on our experience of working with KKB Remediation we would have no problem recommending them for similar work opportunities

James Mawson, Exton Estates

KKB have a continual positive attitude and collaborative project team that are a credit to the company

Liam Disbury , Site Agent, Sisk

KKB’s commitment and professionalism has been exceptional. The reaction from handover has been amazing. You should all be very proud of yourselves and each other, an amazing achievement and rightly recognised by Highways England. I would also like to thank your families for supporting you all whilst working silly hours at short notice on a bank holiday weekend. The M20 is probably one of the most important routes in this country, hence at times like this you are some of the most important people in the country. Well done all.

Clive Leadbetter, MD of A One +

KKB’s knowledge of remediation and partnering approach made them a valuable member of project team. They were able to apply significant resources in terms of manpower and equipment which allowed us to deliver the enabling phase on-budget and ahead of programme

Keith English, Contracts Director, John F Hunt

KKB’s experience of crushing, screening and site logistics has enabled us to efficiently extract and process minerals into high-quality secondary aggregates. Their ability to recycle inert wastes into specific sizes enables our plant to generate highways-grade CBM and enhance projects’ overall sustainability

Kelven Nicholls, Quarry Manager, Tarmac

Tarmac and KKB have a true partnership, KKB provide Asphalt processing and recycle construction and demolition waste for Tarmac at 25 sites across the South. This provides flexibility for Tarmac and a consistent work load for KKB. Through collaboration KKB minimises transport costs whilst Tarmac ensure a quality product is available at all sites on demand. KKB provide advice and support and deliver innovative low cost solutions on request. I am extremely happy with how the relationship has developed it is working well for both parties.
