KKB won a competitive tender to deliver a package of enabling works to facilitate a comprehensive scheme of works to upgrade and secure logistics company Seacon’s long term continued operation in Tower Wharf, an important transhipment facility in the Thames Estuary. The development included a replacement river jetty access within the river, providing dedicated storage areas and development of new high quality office space.
Our work commenced with non-licensed asbestos removal and the strip-out of two office buildings, covering a footprint of 3500 sqm, which included the removal of all non-structural elements such as doors, ceilings, floors/floor coverings, M&E systems and partition walls.
Following this structural demolition of the two-storey buildings, which were constructed from brick walls with a mixture of steel framed roofs and flat wooden roofs, was carried out using a 30-tonne excavator fitted with hydraulic grabs, shears and breaker with a 20-tonne machine cleaning-up. The ground floor slab was excavated and broken-up on-site.
To facilitate the demolition of a concrete ramp which ran-up towards the River Medway, temporary works in the form of metal rod plates were installed to protect live services running alongside which powered overhead cranes and allowed the dock to remain fully active throughout.
Five thousand tonnes of concrete and hardcore wastes were crushed, screened to create 6F2 aggregate which was left on-site for reuse in the build phase. All other waste streams were segregated on-site and removed to local facilities for recycling.
Our works required considerable interface with the busy dock, factories and business in the adjacent industrial trading estate. A jet-wash was employed throughout demolition and loading to suppress dust emissions while noise monitoring was undertaken to ensure we kept to acceptable limits. We received not one complaint during the 5-week project.
