KKB won a competitive tender to deliver the bulk earthworks package for Plot 2050B as part of the on-going redevelopment of the site for the construction of London Gateway Port.

The initiative forms part of the wider port expansion and commercial logistics park development under LDO 2, which comprises a new 10-year plan enabling 733,776 square metres of commercial development, including a logistics park with two additional berths.

The earthworks comprised of the bulk excavation, transport, placement, and compaction of ~700,000 cubic metres of surcharge sand for the Plot 2050B area. The surcharging of the plot is to minimise settlement risk for the future development. The area had previously been band drained, to increase the effectiveness of the surcharging. This phase involved the movement of ~700,000 cubic metres of site-won sand, coming from the plot itself, two adjacent plots, and from an existing stockpile in one of the new berths.

The project was dependent on a detailed logistics plan, ensuring that large-scale volume movements were carried out in an effective manner, minimising the time taken to move the material while effectively managing costs. Combining movements via articulated dump trucks and tipper lorries. KKB utilised GPS-equipped dozers to cut and to fill material at the most efficient rate, while ensuring that all design levels were achieved.

As part of the works, KKB crushed and screened ~17,500m3 of existing concrete arisings to form Class 6F2 material for re-use on site at a later date, minimising waste and costs for the project, with this material now being available for future stages of works.

As the port was live during the project, with a high number of lorry movements going to and from the port each day, KKB, acting as principal contractor, maintained the roadways throughout the project, utilising road sweepers and traffic management operatives to control and reduce dust and debris affecting traffic or dirtying the roadways. Access for the port was successfully maintained throughout the project, with minimal disruption caused. The successful completion of the project by KKB has led to additional works being awarded by DP World, who are now a regular and valued client.
